This is a very powerful analogy of what it means to go the extra-mile.

I would consider the character of James and Thomas metaphorical. Anyone could be James or Thomas at any point in time and in different scenarios.

The key is to humble enough to learn and to see things from the perspective of others.

Results aren't a result of magic, but a result of a certain process - thinking, execution, and evaluation.
